Happy New Year

Sep ‘18 - Aug ‘19Posted by Valerie Edwards Tue, January 08, 2019 20:27:38

A very Happy New Year! We trust you enjoyed a blessed Christmas, celebrating the joyful time with family and friends. Some of our group were privileged to be invited to a number of our schools’ Nativity plays which is always a wonderful way to end the year.

It has been our very great privilege to have prayed for all those involved with our local nurseries, infant, junior and senior schools throughout 2018, as well as those organisations that are closely linked with the children in the Spelthorne area – we trust that each have felt uplifted and encouraged by our prayerful support. We joined with thousands across Europe in November for the annual Pray Day, when children ranging from nursery school age right through to university students were prayed for. We highlighted the day by sending cards and gifts to those we regularly pray for, all of whom were most grateful.

…… what does 2019 hold? We will each have our own personal desires and hopes, and as a Schools’ Prayer Group we are looking forward to what God has been prompting us to engage in this year. Reflecting on 2018 has provided the opportunity to give thanks for the way God has guided and led us over the past 26 years, especially in establishing a firm foundation of trust and commitment with our schools – something we value greatly. Our format has worked well over the years and we have been hugely blessed by countless amazing answers to prayer.

Whilst we know that God “is the same, yesterday today and forever”, we are aware that He is a creative God who encourages us “don’t dwell on the former things, behold I am doing a new thing”. We sense that at the start of this NEW YEAR it is time for A NEW BEGINNING and we are excited to be launching a NEW LOOK Schools’ Prayer Group whereby we will employ a fresh approach as to how we pray for school staff and also discern what the children and their families would value prayer for. We will continue to meet monthly on Fridays but will alternate day-time (10 a.m. – 12 noon) and evenings (7.30 – 9 p.m.), and in addition to praying through the received requests, we will have a specific theme to focus on, all of which we hope will encourage new people to join us.

2017 has been an extremely significant year for us as it saw us celebrate our 25th year as a schools’ prayer group – something to give thanks for indeed! As you can imagine, we have seen many changes over the years, both within our schools - personnel, buildings, curriculum and educational policies – and also within the group - members leaving to either move or take on other responsibilities and, sadly, some who have passed away, but also new folk joining us bringing a freshness and greater knowledge of current school life. Changes bring challenges that in some cases take a while to work through, yet we can see God’s Hand in it all and thank Him for His faithfulness. We are also grateful to you all for supporting us and ensuring the deepening of our very special friendship over the years.

Due to family commitments, Val has stepped down as co-ordinator and our new ‘system’ of running the group is working well with you all kindly sending through your requests each month. We trust you have felt uplifted and encouraged by our prayers throughout another year. We have celebrated two special days of prayer this year - in May the ‘Pray for Schools Fortnight’ coincided with our visit to Laleham CE School, where we were thrilled to meet some of the children in their lovely Faith Corner, and in November, the ‘Pray Day for Schools in Europe’, both of which gave us the opportunity to visit our nurseries, playgroups, schools and organisations that we support and take in gifts as a reminder of our friendship and commitment.

We were delighted to receive requests for the two Scripture Union publications we donate each year to several of our schools during the summer term and which are always gratefully received. To fund the books we engaged in some fun events during the year, including our popular Easter Event, when we welcomed 25 families to spend a fun-packed couple of hours enjoying Easter-themed activities and share the Easter message. We also ran a successful stall at the Upper Halliford Fun Day in May. We had to dig deep in our belief that God would ensure we covered the cost of the books this year, and at our final meeting we were still short, yet that very day, the shortfall of £200 was met in the most marvellous and unexpected ways – what a faithful God we have!

We have been thrilled and delighted to receive invitations to visit some of our schools throughout the year: to hold our meetings at Littleton& Laleham CE Schools, to attend Sunbury Manor’s Celebration of Achievement Evening and to help at Bishop Wand CE School’s Open Evening. It is always a joy to visit Roseacre Playgroup in Shepperton and our team, led by Sally and ably assisted by ‘Polly the Parrot’, entertained the children (and staff!) extremely well on visits through the year.

To round off our year we have been privileged to attend Nativity Plays at Roseacre, Ashford CE and Manor Mead Schools – always a highlight for us and a very fitting way to conclude the year as we look back on God’s provision, guidance, and His ever-present Presence – Jesus Emmanuel, God with us.
